Our mission is to improve survival from cardiac arrest through training and education. As interns, our goal is to go into the community to teach hands only CPR at no cost to the recipient.
To survive a cardiac arrest a number of things have to happen and happen quickly
- 911 has to be called to start getting advanced help to the scene immediately. Every second counts with a cardiac arrest.
- Hands only CPR has to start immediately. CPR acts as a bridge to keep the heart and brain alive until the heart can be restarted.
- The heart has to get restarted. This is done via defibrillation by either an AED or by EMS. This is what really restarts the heart.
- Advanced cardiac care is initiated by EMS during rapid transfer to the hospital.
- Cardiac arrest victims are best cared for with hospitals with an expertise in treatment of these complex patients.
There is great variability in survival of cardiac arrest among communities. We believe there are opportunities to improve survival with improved public awareness, CPR education and by increasing the rate of bystander CPR received by cardiac arrest victims.
